Technology
Lower School
In today’s educational landscape, proficiency with technological tools is essential to support the learning process. At AVS, technology is thoughtfully integrated into the curriculum to enhance learning, not replace it.
Kindergarten and first-grade students use iPads to practice skills through carefully selected apps. Starting in second grade, students transition to Chromebooks, where they become proficient in typing and using various programs. They also begin exploring basic coding concepts through the Scratch program. The Dreambox platform is introduced for differentiated math homework in second through fifth grades, allowing students to work at their own pace. By fourth grade, technology becomes more integrated into everyday learning experiences. For example, students use Google Drive to write, edit, and collaborate across multiple subjects. They also learn how to use voice-to-text tools and audio recording software for creative projects such as radio advertisements or interviews. Some students use Chrome extensions to create stop-motion animation clips.
Internet safety is a key focus throughout the program. Using the Common Sense Media curriculum, students learn about the importance of digital footprints and responsible online behavior. Only after these discussions are students permitted to use laptops to explore research projects.
Finally, computer programming is woven into different courses, providing students with hands-on, cross-curricular projects. For example, first graders learn about direction and measurement by programming robots to navigate mazes. Second graders program interactive name poems, while third graders use Scratch to illustrate the silkworm life cycle. Fourth graders create interactive math games using random number generators, and fifth graders bring models to life with Makey-Makey technology.
MIddle School
Technology
All middle school students are provided with a school-issued Chromebook to use at school for their coursework. At Alta Vista Middle School, teachers incorporate making into their classes by using tools like the Laser Cutter and 3D printers. The Otus online learning management system allows both students and parents to access assignments and assessments at any time. While technology is integrated throughout the Middle School curriculum, students can also choose elective courses in Computer Science to further enhance their skills.
