Walking for Peace, Marching for Justice

Walking for Peace, Marching for Justice
Angela Fisher, Director of Equity and Community

Earlier this month, the Lower School community at Alta Vista School filled the neighborhood with music, movement, and a shared message of hope during a very special Peace Walk. Students created handmade signs, chanted together — “Peace in our school, peace in our town, peace in our world!” They also joyfully sang the chorus of One Love by Bob Marley as a teacher carried a Bluetooth speaker so we could all sing along. Teachers and families marched side by side, making the walk not only a visible expression of peace, but a celebration of community and collective care.

The prior week, several of our middle school students gathered at Dolores Park for the ICE OUT rally, joining thousands of young people advocating for immigrant rights and calling for policy change related to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Supported by faculty and administrators, our students stood alongside peers from across the Bay Area and were especially inspired to see AVS alumni participating with their high schools as well.

Together, these two events reflect the many ways our students are learning to raise their voices, engage thoughtfully with the world around them, and live out the values of empathy, courage, and community.
