Civic Innovation in Action: Empowering Fourth Graders Through the Design Thinking Process
Dina Moskowitz, Fourth Grade Teacher

Last month, our fourth-grade classrooms transformed into hubs of civic innovation as students embarked on an ambitious journey to improve our school. Using the Design Thinking framework, they moved beyond simple brainstorming to become true problem-solvers, blending social studies, literacy, and empathy into one powerful project.

The journey began with the Empathize phase. To understand the heart of the AVS community, students conducted a deep needs analysis. They designed their own research tools—including user interviews, surveys, and whole-class discussions—to gather data from peers and faculty alike.

Armed with this research, they moved into the Define stage. Here, students analyzed their qualitative and quantitative data to narrow their focus, identifying the specific problems that most needed solving within their school.

Next came the Ideate phase. Grouped by their areas of interest, students began "freely dreaming" about potential improvements. They merged these creative ideas with their social studies curriculum, learning how the California proposition system functions and what it takes to get a measure onto a real ballot.

With a clear vision in mind, the students began to Prototype. This was a rigorous step that bridged the gap between ideas and reality. Each student authored a five-paragraph persuasive essay detailing their proposition, the community need it addressed, and a breakdown of the associated costs.

Finally, it was time to Test their solutions. Groups stood before Ms. Katie to pitch their final proposals in a high-stakes "boardroom" setting. The energy on campus was electric as several student-led propositions were officially approved for a school-wide vote. Seeing the entire school participate in the election was a proud moment for our fourth graders, proving that their voices—and their designs—have the power to create lasting change at AVS.
