Lower School
Lower School Spanish - Introduction to Spanish Language and Culture
At AVS, our Lower School Spanish program opens a window to the rich traditions of the Spanish-Speaking World while giving students the tools to communicate in another language. From the very first years, children don’t just learn vocabulary - they discover a culture, practice authentic communication, and build confidence in expressing themselves.
Each grade level introduces new thematic vocabulary- from feelings, body parts, and family members to adjectives, colors, numbers, shapes, and days of the week. These words and phrases are brought to life through lively games, puppet shows, songs with our music teacher, videos, and role-playing activities. Students learn not only how to name things, but also how to describe themselves and others, share how they feel, and express their likes and dislikes in Spanish.
As students progress, expectations grow with them. By fourth grade, they are writing full sentences to describe family members and themselves, articulating their emotions, and exploring cultural traditions in greater depth. Projects become the cornerstone of learning, encouraging collaboration, teamwork, and creativity while strengthening both oral and written Spanish skills.
Our goal is to spark curiosity, foster appreciation for diverse cultures, and build a strong foundation for lifelong language learning.

Below are the main components of the Spanish academic program.
Verbal and Written Communication
Students are exposed to simple commands, questions, statements, and short conversations. By fourth grade, students are exposed to written Spanish, verb conjugation, and project-based learning.
Vocabulary
Initially, students become familiar with the sound of the Spanish language and begin to label and identify the vocabulary. Over the years, previously learned vocabulary is reinforced and introduced as written words.
Cultural Awareness
Students develop an understanding of the similarities and differences between Spanish and English. Important people, customs, and traditions of Spanish-speaking cultures are explored. Key elements of Spanish and Hispanic history are also read and discussed.
Middle School
Middle School Spanish - Building Confident Communicators

In Middle School, Spanish becomes much more than a subject — it’s a tool for authentic communication and cultural connection. Our program is designed to help students apply their skills in meaningful ways, building both fluency and confidence as they explore the Spanish-speaking world.
Students focus on the four key pillars of language learning - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - through immersive experiences. Classes are conducted primarily in Spanish, giving students constant opportunities to practice real-world communication. Lessons are carefully aligned with ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) standards, ensuring students develop the strategies they need to become competent, confident communicators.
Across all levels, students expand their vocabulary, explore language patterns, and put their skills into practice through engaging conversations, projects, and real-life scenarios. Spanish Intro through Spanish 4 advanced courses are offered, with placement determined by a combination of test results, teacher recommendations, classroom performance, and current Spanish course enrollment.
Our goal is for students to graduate from Middle School not only with a strong command of the language, but also with a deeper appreciation for the cultures and communities where Spanish is spoken.
