Founded in San Francisco in 2010, Alta Vista School implements an inquiry-based STEAM program serving approximately 300 students across two campuses. 

Alta Vista School encourages students to go beyond a strong academic foundation to pursue their passions with the help of our community. Faculty, administrators, and families believe experiences and hands-on activities are the best practice for meaningful learning. AVS educators benefit from small class sizes and are intentional in their instruction. The role

Opportunity starting August 2022. Alta Vista Middle School is seeking a dynamic music educator to lead the middle school music program. The team is looking for an experienced, energetic, learner-centric teacher, with a passion for developing an inquiry-based, thematic curriculum that integrates social and emotional learning (SEL) and technology throughout the classroom experience. The teacher will effectively and collaboratively develop a differentiated, innovative learning experience that makes thinking visual and fosters creative problem-solving. In addition, the teacher should be able to promote a positive and responsive classroom culture.

Strong communication skills and professional ethics are essential. Additional responsibilities include participating in professional development and school committees, leading an after-school club once a week, and advising a small group of students as well as various daily duties on a rotating basis. Educators with experience working with middle school students who possess an interest in curriculum development and an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to teaching are strongly encouraged to apply.  

Traits and requirements

  • Lead middle school band and general music courses
  • Design and teach music appreciation classes to middle school students
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of middle school students
  • Lead an after-school club one day a week
  • Participate in field trips, including an annual grade-level trip.
  • Design and maintain a vibrant classroom environment
  • Work cooperatively and collegially with the school’s administration, the faculty and staff, and the parents to create and maintain an exemplary school environment
  • Prepare for and actively participate in all school activities, faculty meetings, and conferences, including those with parents, during and after school hours as may be necessary
  • Engage in professional development and teacher growth opportunities.
  • Cultivate collaboration, transparency, inclusion, curiosity, fun, innovation, and excellence in a dynamic learning community
  • Conduct dynamic and flexible instruction to address a variety of learning styles and interests
  • Reflect on teaching with a critical eye in order to continuously improve practice
  • Evaluate and give feedback on student progress regularly using standards based assessment
  • Provide students with inquiry-based learning opportunities
  • As this is an in-person position, candidates must be up-to-date on vaccinations for COVID-19.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; master's degree preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of music curricula and teaching best-practices
  • Experience teaching music at the middle school and/or secondary school level
  • Familiarity with teaching in independent schools
