Biography

Mr RK (Aaron) joined the AVS community after working as a science teacher since 2016. Before becoming a science teacher, he worked with zoos and after-school programs, creating interactive experiences for students and guests. He moved to the Bay Area shortly before COVID and continues to discover more to enjoy about California. With a golden retriever in San Francisco, he is especially keen to find outdoor areas to explore. Outside of the classroom, Mr RK is a contra dancer, reptile enthusiast, and volunteers with the AIDS Memorial Foundation.

Math and science were both hard for Mr RK as a student, and he tries to bring an understanding of concepts to all students through multiple avenues. Work in his class is less about getting the answer "right," and more about explaining how you did it to someone else using evidence. All learners will practice sharing their ideas with others verbally, in writing, and with creative presentations to build and demonstrate mastery.

Middle school marks the beginning of a seven year arc of increasingly difficult challenges that no student should face alone. In all of his classes, Mr RK hopes to instill a sense of group cohesion and care in his learners as they journey together at Alta Vista through a mix of fun, shared experiences and memorable conversations.
