Other Information

MK believes that we all need opportunities to examine how we live and how we want to live. Her friends at a small, public JK-8 in Illinois embraced her philosophical nature. In middle school, they nicknamed her “Voice of Reason” and had her student council hat embroidered to say that. Placed into one of the largest and most competitive public high schools in the nation, MK focused on learning for its own sake. She led student movements that increased student voice and choice. At Boston College, MK analyzed primary sources in the humanities and natural sciences. She trained as an educator in three boarding schools and at Yale, where she won the Mersick Prize for effective public address.

MK came to AVS in August of 2018; she now has experience teaching in three day schools. She adores the blunt honesty and sheer energy of middle school students. MK blends structure and choice through an intentional rhythm that empowers students to follow their curiosity, teach their peers, and reenact historical events. She also prioritizes honing executive functioning skills and social emotional learning competencies. MK is quite like her late Grandma Alice, an Armenian-American artist who banned the word “bored” at her family farm in New York. MK and her div school sweetheart, Taylor, share teaching ideas over dinner. Sheba, their regal creamsicle cat, has her own chair at the table!
