FULL TIME
Full-time students attend Alta Vista in a term schedule
compatible to those established within the Kitsap County school
districts. Washington Core Requirements and Essential Learning
Guidelines are strictly adhered to with curriculum developed to
be credit compatible with the public schools.
Full-time student’s focus is not only on academics, but on the
development of positive citizenship, the fulfillment of
responsibilities attendant in the transition from youth to adult,
and on individual growth in the context of healthy community
membership. The program is, by design and philosophy,
preparatory for college, career and life. Alta Vista expects
students to obtain self-discipline skills and a strong sense of
individualism. In this regard, curricula designs center on
individual learning styles and needs. Diplomas are awarded
upon program completion.
INDEPENDENT / TUTORIAL STUDIES
Alta Vista’s Independent/Tutorial Studies Program can be used
to supplement public and private school offerings, to meet their
obligations and satisfy student educational needs. The program
is designed for students who are homebound, have difficulty
coping with the time and/or place of classroom, need basic skill
instruction, desire scholastic acceleration, or want a quality
education in a home setting. Alta Vista offers the following
types of courses: Core Requirement, electives for students with
varied interests, advanced/accelerated, and basics. Youth may
also participate in sports (public school) or Skill Center
programs along with Independent Studies. Contact and class
hours are arranged individually.
RE-ENTRY
The Re-Entry Program is for students who have dropped away
from the educational mainstream through lack of attendance,
suspension or expulsion. The program has been developed with
interested representatives of agencies and community
organizations to meet the multiple needs of high-risk students.
Desired student outcomes are focused on pro-social
development, enhanced self-esteem, reductions in disruptive
behaviors, and skills necessary to align behaviors compatible
with the student’s home school and district.
THE SCHOOL IS STUDENT / SERVICE ORIENTED
Targeted potential students are those who have either been
classified as at-risk or have evaluated themselves as at-risk.
"At-risk", in our context, applies to any student (adolescent)
experiencing mental, emotional, behavioral or psychological
disruptions that block their positive progress in establishing the
basic building blocks of success: self-conceptualization, esteem,
analysis, confidence, stability and goal-oriented intrinsic
motivates.
This organization’s sociological endeavor is to ground such
students in positive community membership and citizenship.
Negative behaviors can be impacted by facilitating instruction in
the analysis of the range of consequences (both negative and
positive) that result from every action. Students are guided to
consider an array of choices. Dependant upon their immediate
level of conceptualization, they can form an individualized
hierarchy of outcomes and priorities. Therefore, they begin to
discriminate between alternative life choices – binding them to
responsibility and accountability.
